San Francisco Green Drinks
November 2nd
“Effective Networking & Conscious Voting“
Hello Green Drinkers!
Please join us next Tuesday, November 2nd for San Francisco Green Drinks!
November’s theme focuses us on being conscious and effective “networkers” as well as voters. Networking and voting both call for a common act to succeed, preparation. Being prepared to vote can make or break the outcome just as being prepared to converse at an event can make the conversation flow with ease. To execute smoothly, both require asking questions, researching, listening, learning and being open to new perspectives. We challenge you in the next week leading up to November 2nd to listen to the conversations around you, take a stab at your own research, and arm yourself with tools to make informed choices and conversations. Note the Tips for Effective Networking below and you will be sure to succeed not only at the polls but at SF Green Drinks directly following! Join us November 2nd after your raise your individual voice and VOTE!
Tips for Effective Networking:
1. Enter the venue with confidence and smile. Look for a friendly face and introduce yourself. If you don’t see an opportunity to meet someone right away don’t panic.
2. Work on being more “interested” rather than “interesting”. Memorize this phrase: ‘Tell me more about…’ and use it! Just relax, be yourself and listen. Your opportunity to pitch yourself will come naturally (prepare a brief 10-30 seconds long).
3. Don’t forget, networking is a two way street – it is about building relationships. We know you have something interesting to share, but why not give first? Perhaps you can recommend a great book or website, share an article, or maybe you can make a valuable introduction.
4. Remember, all conversations must end at some point so don’t be afraid to politely excuse yourself and thank the person for their time. Reasons to wrap up can include going to get a drink, going to the restroom, or needing to talk with someone before they leave. Whatever the reason, be honest and be genuine.
5. This tip is so simple and important yet somehow it frequently gets ignored. If you promise to do something (call, send an article, make an introduction) do it!
“Think about making use of these networking tips the next time you plan to do some networking. The truth is people do business with people they know, like, and trust. This occurs over time and is all about building relationships, not about collecting business cards. Be yourself, be real and have fun” – 2005 Stephanie Ward
November Sponsor: Earth Island Presents & ecoReserve
Earth Island Presents … UPDATE: Fix or Nix: The Environment and Technology: Stewart Brand in Conversation with Mark Hertsgaard on Thursday, November 18 has been CANCELED. Stewart Brand has grabbed attention by arguing that environmentalists should rethink their positions on nuclear power, GMOs, and the geoengineering of the planet, ideas laid out in his recent book, Whole Earth Discipline. How can technology best be used to foster sustainability? Journalist Mark Hertsgaard —the environment correspondent for The Nation and the author of six books, including the forthcoming Hot: Living Through the Next Fifty Years on Earth, will discuss that question and others at what promises to be a provocative dialogue. Book-signing to follow. www.eii.org
ecoReserve is creating a fun, social, tangible way to help protect our planet. We’re calling it Micro-Conservation. Through our website, you can adopt your own living-room size nature reserve on endangered land for as little as $25. Then you can share your reserve with friends and invite them to adopt reserves next to yours. ecoReserve’s mission is to restore and protect endangered land, support sustainable livelihoods, and spawn a new grassroots movement for micro-conservation. Our model is to provide this micro-funding to partner nonprofits around the world that will implement the field programs. In October 2010, we launched our pilot project in Panama, where our partner Earth Train will restore and protect rainforest degraded by logging and cattle-ranching. This project will strengthen the Jaguar Trail wildlife corridor and provide a buffer zone to the land of the indigenous Kuna people. Please adopt a parcel on this reserve today! www.ecoreserve.org
