San Francisco Green Drinks
October 6th
“Next Generation of Activists”

Happy Fall Green Drinkers!

Please join us next Tuesday, October 6th for the next San Francisco Green Drinks.

The youth of the green movement are the focus of our October theme: “Next Generation of Activits.” Join Earth Island Institute Tuesday, October 20th for their 10th Annual Brower Youth Awards.  BYA is the premier awards honoring bold young environmental leaders. The Awards ceremony reservations are free and open to the public and there is a VIP Opening Reception fundraiser before the free awards ceremony.

We are raffling off two passes to the VIP Opening Reception Pre-BYA celebration, 5:30-7:15pm, in the Herbst Theatre Green Room. There you can meet this year’s Brower Youth Award honorees, past winners, sponsors, donors, and other honored guests and visit with many of Earth Island Institute’s projects (100$ value per ticket).

Be sure to check out SFGD’s new Calendar! Come by and post an event on September 1st!

September Sponsor is Earth Island Institute

Earth Island Institute was founded 27 years ago in SF by the visionary environmentalist David Brower. They grow environmental leadership through education and activism. As a fiscal sponsor of fifty solutions focused projects, and with their Earth Island Journal, public programming at their new green offices in the Brower Center in Berkeley and their core programs: Restoration Initiatives, and the New Leaders Initiative/Brower Youth Awards, Earth Island supports the cultural and biological diversity that sustain the environment.

EarthIsland’s Project Support program is an incubator for start-up environmental projects, giving crucial assistance to groups and individuals with new ideas for promoting ecological sustainability. Since 1982, they have been an organizational home to more than 100 projects around the globe. Come to the October Green Drinks and meet three of their local projects: Bay Area Wilderness Training,  Nature in the City, and Bay Localize. All three of these Bay Area groups have fantastic volunteer opportunities. BAWT, who was recently featured at our Green Generations event, will host a volunteer day for the SF Green Drinks Community on Wednesday October 21, 6-9pm at 2301 Broadway Suite B, Oakland. Sign up at the event or contact Clifford Agocs at cliff@bawt.org.

Also, we will feature their New Leaders Initiative, which will present their 10th Annual Brower Youth Awards on 10/20/09 in San Francisco.

Project Wrecking Ball launches at Varnish Fine Art and continues until the wrecking ball swings. A group of over 25 artists as they transform Varnish Fine Art in the coming months, during Project Wrecking Ball. This long-term art project and exhibit is Varnish’s response to the pending eminent domain demolition of their current location at 77 Natoma Street in downtown San Francisco.  The varied artwork will be created in paint, encaustic and photo-emulsion directly on the brick walls and on panels in addition to metal sculpture and kinetic art installations. Project Wrecking Ball launches with a party on Friday September 25, 7-11pm, and PWB will continue until the wrecking ball swings on Varnish Fine Art—whenever that will be!  This gallery and wine bar will soon have to vacate 77 Natoma Street, but the business’ owners hope to re-establish Varnish Fine Art at a new location soon.
